| Lionfish & Diadema Trip on the Cat Ppalu | Date: 09, 2008
| Our next lionfish trip will be on the Cat Ppalu October 11-17, 2008! We will also be doing a Diadema relocation.
There are very few lionfish in the Nothern Exumas even though there are many in the surrounding island chains. Scientists are beginning to believe that the healthy grouper population in the Land & Sea Park may be the reason. In the past most lionfish we have seen in the Northern Exumas were in areas where there were few grouper. We will try to see if that is still the case. We will also try to observe lionfish for part of a day. Any lionfish we find will be removed.
Diadema antillarium kept the reefs clear of algae. In 1983 these disappeared from the Caribbean allowing algae to take over the bare parts of the reef. As coral died they took over more of the reef. In recent years they have started coming back in shallow areas, but not on the deeper reefs. We have discovered how to relocated them to these reefs. We will do a collection one night and then clean a portion of a reef before re-introducing the Diadema.
Below is a recent article about the lionfish invasion.
